Where nature, art, and angling meet.

Animorphology captures the imagination of anglers and art lovers alike. A swirl of life and ingenuity, it honours New Zealand’s most iconic fishing flies while celebrating the creativity behind their design.

The Story Behind the Flies

Fishing flies are more than just lures—they are tiny marvels of craftsmanship, born from generations of trial, error, and artistry. From the everyday patterns anglers reach for on the river, to the unusual and eccentric flies tied for the sheer joy of creation, each tells a story of connection: to trout, to water, to the natural world. Animorphology brings them all together in one unforgettable vision.

The Meaning of Animorphology

The title of this artwork is a word created by the artist—Animorphology. It speaks to the transformation at the heart of fly tying: the craft of shaping feathers, fur, and thread into lifelike animal forms. From insects to small creatures, each fly is a tiny illusion of nature, designed to tempt a trout. Together in this piece, they embody the imagination, skill, and artistry that turn fishing into something more than sport—a living art form.

Nature, Design, and the Spirit of Fishing—In One Artwork

From the iconic to the obscure, Animorphology is a striking visual tribute to New Zealand’s fishing flies. This artwork spirals with life, showcasing the ingenious imitations that anglers use to tempt trout—flies that echo the form of creatures from smelt to cicadas, from wasps to crayfish, from grasshoppers to spiders, frogs, and even mice. Each fly is more than a tool—it is a miniature work of art, crafted to look alive.

Brought together, they form a hypnotic circle, swimming in endless motion, a celebration of design inspired by nature.

Printed on premium Ilford fine art paper, Animorphology is available in 24x24 inch and 44x44 inch sizes. Every print is signed by the artist and produced as an open edition. A unique piece for anglers, nature lovers, and collectors of fine art—this is a print that connects you to the beauty, ingenuity, and spirit of trout fishing in New Zealand.
